Preventing Roof Damages from Edmonton Spring Storms

Spring has sprung, is your roof ready for those “April Showers”? A. Clark Roofing & Siding LP has been helping Edmonton and St. Albert residents answer this question for more than 60 years. We understand that your roof is your home’s first defense against harsh weather and that in spring, missing or damaged shingles if left unrepaired, can lead to leaks, rot, and other serious damage.

Fortunately, there are a number of activities you can do to prepare your property and to prevent spring storm damage including:
•    Inspection – look to see if there are any loose or missing shingles, cracked or peeling caulk, and flashing around vents, chimneys, and pipes. Periodically check your attic for signs of leaks including signs of damaged or moldy insulation, rotting or stained boards or ceiling panels, and puckering, discolored sheetrock. Look for any signs of squirrels, mice, raccoons, birds and bats: Entry holes near eaves or close to ground, drilling sites by birds or insects, chew marks on wood or wiring, or shredded building materials around the foundation. A roofing professional can do a thorough inspection if your roof is older, you have experienced a particularly stormy winter, or if your uncomfortable of unfamiliar with the process.
•    Repair and Replace – Cracked, bent, and missing shingles or areas of ‘ponding’ – pools of standing water that appear on your roof after it rains – need immediate attention as these conditions can make your roof vulnerable to leaks and rot.
•    Clean – gutters, drains, and downspouts, check for any damage caused by ice and snow, and that downspouts and connections are secure. This is one of the most important maintenance steps for your home.
•    Check trees and around your property – especially at any within “falling” distance your roof and power utility lines. Falling branches and accumulated leaves can damage a roof, and if they pose a danger to utility lines, call the service company to take down potentially hazardous branches or trees.

Sometimes spring leaves on a gale instead of a breeze, along with rain, lightning, hail, spring flooding and tornadoes. Unpredictable, extreme spring weather and water events can leave behind a trail of destruction with flooded property, damaged roofs, broken windows and downed trees. Don’t let this be your story, protect your roof, and it will protect you.
