Archie Clark returned from Britain after serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War. He started working for his brother, Bill, in Calgary in the roofing business. Shortly after the oil boom started with the discovery of oil in Leduc, the brothers decided to open shop in Edmonton. Archie moved to Edmonton in 1953 to start A. Clark Roofing & Sheet Metal Co. Ltd.
Because of the Depression, Archie was only able to stay in school until grade 8. Realizing the importance of education for the success of the business, he later took several relevant correspondence courses while running the business and starting a family. Combined with hard work, a great personality, and the skills learned from the courses, Archie ran the company successfully.
Business is about relationships, so Archie had the company join the Edmonton Homebuilders Association in 1954, the Better Business Bureau in 1959, and the Alberta Roofing Contractors Association—where he was president from 1975-1976.
Despite facing challenges, he was able to establish one of the most respected roofing companies in Edmonton. He also took on two partners: Al MacDougal in flat roofing and David Bell with slope roofing.
The company’s original office was on 81 Street near the exhibition grounds. In the early ‘70s, a new building was constructed on Davies Road on Edmonton’s south side, and we’re now at our current location at 3120 93 Street.
Today, A. Clark Roofing & Siding LP is still a family-owned business. Archie’s son, Doug Clark, is now president of the company. Doug maintains the same work ethic and values as his father, and these are characteristics shared with his staff members.
