5 Common Myths About Residential Solar Panels – Debunked!

Residential solar panels in Edmonton and throughout Alberta are growing exponentially in popularity. At A. Clark Roofing & Siding LP., our roofers have noticed that many homeowners are interested in getting solar panels, but that some common misconceptions are keeping them from taking the plunge. We’d like to address some of these myths in order to help you come to an informed decision about whether solar panels are right for you.

Myth #1 – Solar panels are too expensive

Solar panels did use to be quite costly, but the price has decreased significantly over the last few years. Today, the average residential system costs between $10,000 and $15,000. While this still represents an investment, you’ll get to enjoy savings on your energy bill and an increase in your property value. You can also save up to $10,000 or 30% of total system costs through the Government of Alberta’s solar rebate program.

Myth #2 – Solar panels don’t work well in cold climates

This is the leading myth keeping Canadians from considering solar panels. The reality is, however, that solar panels work just fine in colder temperatures, as they use light, not heat. In fact, temperatures over 32 C can hinder a solar panel’s efficiency. What matters far more than climate is your home’s suitability for solar power.

Myth #3 – Solar panels won’t produce enough energy on snowy or cloudy days

Technically short winter days can limit how much electricity a system can generate but it does not have a large impact.  In a solar energy study conducted by NAIT in Edmonton, snow cover was estimated to cause 20% less effectiveness but it was found that it only affects the intake by 3%. It is not even recommended to both clearing the snow. Our experienced Edmonton roofing contractors can install your system in a way that maximizes output, still providing you with plenty of energy bill savings. Plus, short winter days eventually lead to long summer days of near-constant electricity generation.

Solar panels are typically installed at an angle, and the slippery surface of the panels usually causes snow to slide right off before it can limit the panel’s efficiency. Cloudy skies don’t hinder a solar panel’s efficiency much either, as the panels are capable of using scattered, indirect sunlight as well as direct sunlight.

Myth #4 – Solar panels are difficult to maintain

The truth is that solar panels couldn’t be easier to maintain and that a good rain will usually do the majority of the work for you. Because they have no moving components, they also rarely break down. Check out our guide to solar panel maintenance to find out more.

Myth #5 – Solar panels will reduce my home’s curb appeal

While it’s a matter of personal taste, many homeowners enjoy the sleek and thin look of today’s solar panels once they see them. If you’re still not a fan, however, then you also have the option of solar roofing. Solar roofing uses photovoltaic shingles rather than panels, mimicking the look of a traditional roof.
