Choosing an Edmonton Roofer

At A. Clark Roofing and Siding LP we love what we do – installing and maintaining roofs and siding on our neighbors homes in Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park for 60 years. However, selecting a properly certified and high quality roofing contractor is an important and often a difficult task for consumers who are unfamiliar with the roofing industry.

There are a large number of roofing contractors who are not certified, and have both low quality installations and poor workmanship. The average start-up business is usually closed within three years, and may be out of business when potential roofing problem arise. Those that do work on the side or are just working out of a pick-up truck can always do the work cheaper. But in the long run, you get what you pay for. Customers that are sold on price as their sole criteria ultimately end up spending more money to fix problems, and many of these problems would have been covered under a workmanship guarantee by a reputable established roofing company.

To help you our neighbors, here is a list of helpful tips to assist you in choosing the right roofing contractor and getting the best service for your money.

First, make sure that your contractor has worker’s compensation (WCB) and liability insurance. Check to see if the contractor is part of local and national industry associations, is a member of the Better Business Bureau, and the local Chamber of Commerce. Also, an established contractor should be able to provide a business address, phone, and email as a sign of a stable company. Chose a local company – the warranty is only as good as the longevity and reputation of the roofing company in the community. Be cautious of subcontractors who are often paid on a per job basis, and steer clear of the storm chasers, those knock-on-the-door just canvassing and selling.

All job specifications and prices should be supplied in writing. Established companies with strong financial stability usually do not require a deposit. Deposits are common however so be wary of any contractor requesting more than a third of the cost of the project. Make sure that you are satisfied with the result and that the terms of payment were discussed prior to the job and adhered to by both parties.

Finally, obtain at least two quotes through local referrals. Look for a contractor who offers emergency service, and ask the contractor for references of previous customers.
