Roof Replacement in Edmonton

If you’re old enough to remember the Friendly Giant (played by Bob Homme) – the popular Canadian children’s television program that aired on CBC Television from September 30, 1958 through to March 1985 –  then you’ll also remember the show’s opening line “Look up. Look way up” as viewers were invited into the castle. There you would meet the Giant’s puppet animal friends Rusty (a rooster who played a harp and lived in a book bag hung by the castle window) and Jerome (a giraffe), manipulated and voiced by Rod Coneybeare.

Just over 30 years later, today when someone says ‘Look up’ either the sky is falling, or they’ve noticed a problem with the roof of your home. A solid roof above your head is pretty crucial if you’ve become accustomed to having a warm, cozy, and leak-free castle.

At A. Clark Roofing & Siding LP, we want your ‘castle’ to be as safe and as inviting as you do. Here’s a few signs to help you determine if your roofing concerns need attention now, before these issues become more serious.

Age – none of us are getting younger and while life expectancy varies, an asphalt shingle roof should last between 20 and 30 years with annual inspections and regular maintenance.

Curling – is a sign of weathering and indicates that problems, including potentially leaks, are imminent. When shingles turn upward, it is called cupping and clawing is when the edges stay flat and the middle starts to come up.

Cracking – is typically a result of wind damage. Shingles can be replaced but this is the time to start thinking about a new roof.

Missing – shingles need maintenance and replacing a few should be no problem except for matching colour, however, this is a sign that replacement should be planned and budgeted for within the next five years.

Granules – help keep the sun off the asphalt and finding a few in the gutter is natural, but after time the few become the many and if you have just started to notice the granules in the gutter, the shingles are probably halfway through their lifespan.

Finally, if you can see light shining through to the inside of your attic, or the roof is sagging – you’ve likely missed a lot of maintenance and are in for some major structural repairs.
